Vinyl is a physical medium with mechanical limitations. Understanding these is the first step to a great sounding record.

Many artists make the mistake of using the same master for digital streaming and vinyl. While digital audio can handle extreme levels and wide stereo imaging in the low end, vinyl is subject to the physics of a needle tracking a groove.

1. Phase and the "Y" Cut

The needle moves horizontally for the "mid" signal and vertically for the "side" signal. Excessive out-of-phase information in the low frequencies can cause the needle to jump out of the groove entirely. We recommend mono-summing your low end (typically everything below 150-200Hz) to ensure a stable, punchy track.

2. High Frequency "Sibilance"

Vinyl handles high frequencies differently than digital. Harsh "s" sounds or bright cymbals can lead to distortion, often called "inner groove distortion," as the needle moves closer to the center of the record. A gentle de-esser and a smooth high-cut filter can perform wonders for the final playback.

3. Dynamic Range

Unlike digital platforms where "loudness wars" lead to heavily compressed audio, vinyl thrives on dynamic range. A master with room to breathe will actually sound louder and more powerful when the listener turns up their amplifier than a heavily limited, flat-sounding track.
